IOM has been working with the Government of Ethiopia (GoE) in order to effectively manage the existing migration patterns and dynamics that are affecting the country. Recognizing the important role of IOM in developing and implementing a strategic approach to managing migration at different levels, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia became a full member of IOM in December 2011 after years of being an observer state. The membership of Ethiopia to IOM would increase the collaboration possibilities to address the challenges of irregular migration and at the same time tap into the benefits that resulted from well managed and orderly migration. By being a member of IOM, Ethiopia could benefit in the following areas of assistance:
- Refugee Resettlement,
- Emergency response
- Transportation assistance
- Repatriation Assistance
Intervention Focus Areas:
Refugee Resettlement: IOM facilitates the departures of refugees from Ethiopia for resettlement to the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many European countries through providing logistic support to migrants/refugees for resettlement interviews, processing the relevant documentation and arranging safe and reliable domestic and international transportation, and accommodating refugees at IOM transit centres. All this is coordinated with UNHCR and Administration for Refugee and Returnee Affairs (ARRA) of Ethiopia.
Logistical support: IOM also provides the logistical support for interviewing countries to process the necessary caseload either in Addis Ababa, Jijiga or in Shire Sub Offices.
Consular services: Consular services being provided include requests for Visas on behalf of migrants applying for family reunification, translations, and document verification. The CANVAC Canadian Visa Application Center was opened in November 2013 to facilitate the visa application process for students, migrants and visitors to Canada.
Repatriation of refugees: IOM also handled repatriation of refugees by road and airlift operations to Sudan in support of the repatriation program of the UNHCR and Administration for Refugee and Returnee Affairs (ARRA) of Ethiopia.
Relocation/emergency: The organization also has expertise in providing services of relocation in emergency situations.
