IOM and Government of Switzerland Reaffirm Commitment to Migration Research in Africa through the Africa Migration Report
Addis Ababa - The International Organization for Migration and the Swiss Embassy in Ethiopia met on 13 October 2022 to discuss strengthening collaboration on migration related work, with both committing to the Second Edition of the Africa Migration Report that will be released at the end of 2023.
The meeting between Madame Cisse Mariama Mohamed, the Director of IOM’s Special Liaison Office to the AU and UNECA and HE Ambassador Pietro Mona, Representative to the AU, UNECA and IGAD, took place at the Embassy of Switzerland in Addis Ababa.
Both were accompanied by their respective delegations who work on migration issues.
The meeting follows the signing of a funding agreement between IOM and the Swiss Confederations for the Second Edition of the Africa Migration Report that has an overarching focus on regional integration in Africa.
Madame Cisse said, “By addressing contextual realities and bringing to light practical interventions and evidence-based knowledge on what is happening on the ground, the Report will produce knowledge and analysis that will contribute to the African Union continental integration agenda.”
Ambassador Mona added, “We are happy to support the production of this Second Edition and look forward to continued dialogue, especially to explore a number of opportunities to promote and popularize the Report that we hope will cultivate an informed public debate on migration.”
The Government of Switzerland, together with the US State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) are supporting production of the Africa Migration Report.
Working together with the African Union Commission, IOM provides overall supervision and coordination during the drafting and editorial review of expert prepared chapters of the report.
The first edition, Africa Migration Report: Challenging the Narrative was published in October 2020 and dwelt on deconstructing negative perceptions of migration in Africa by addressing contextual realities and bringing to light practical interventions and evidence-based knowledge on what is happening on the ground.
